For many, the New Year is a sign of a fresh start, a clean slate. And as such, we take a moment to ponder our resolutions and reflect on what aspects of our lives need changing. Often it’s nothing major, perhaps a goal to get fit or read more books. These are good goals for any year, however, we think they could be even better if we just took them one step further. What if instead of focusing solely on ourselves, we also try to better the wellbeing of others as well?

Resolutions aren’t always easy to keep as they require an adjustment in lifestyle, but we think when you include the care and wellbeing of someone else into the mix, staying accountable is just a little bit easier. The importance of staying socially active as you age is one of the best ways to keep your mind sharp and fighting mental illnesses. The brain needs to be stimulated in order to stay sharp, reducing the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. But not only that, social activity also boosts immune systems and improves nutrition.

Here are four New Year’s resolutions that will be as easy as they are fruitful for you to accomplish this year. Full steam ahead into 2017 everyone!

1. Join a club 

Pick a club, any club! Surrounding yourself with people who are interested in the same activities and hobbies as you encourages healthy social interaction. When you can fully engage with others and actually enjoy the activity, you are more likely to get out of the house and stick to your resolution. Everyone benefits from some peer support. There are tons of clubs you can join too! Everything from chess to sports clubs – it doesn’t matter, just get your mind active and the body will follow.

2. Take a class

Of course, you can always expand your horizons and try something you’ve never done before. Learn a new language or have someone teach you how to cook something new. Forcing your brain to learn new things keeps it from going stagnant, plus, it can just be downright good fun! It’s also the perfect atmosphere to make new friends in. 3. Volunteer 

This is the ultimate way to help others as you help yourself. Find an organisation and cause that you are passionate about and you’ll find that improving the lives of others also helps improve your own. When volunteering, you’re out of the house being social with others, which in turn fights depression and anxiety as it tends to make people feel happier with a sense of purpose which inflates self-confidence. You can’t go wrong with that!

4. Travel more

Can you feel yourself falling into a rut? Once the body does something repeatedly for an extended period of time, it doesn’t even have to think about what it’s doing – repetition like this gets boring for your mind.

Feel yourself open up and get curious about the new things that surround you.

So, if you have the means to travel more do it. But even if you don’t, just taking a walk with a friend or caregiver outside of your normal route around the neighbourhood can do wonders for your mind.
